Mariner's song
Q 4rammyteens, 1993, Alexandria, Virginia. Backup vocals by Jason and Shoegazer.
← EP Un-Till.
On the waves there is fighting
On the boats there is wailing
On the shore there is crying
Into the sea, crashing on bodies
Bodies into the ocean, blood blood
Into the fish, water, water bleeding
Mourn for the weeping alight
Console in the water broken fists
Cold bodies floating sinking fish
Aloo there, Ahoy!
Alloh, ah, alloh
Arise, seaman, arise this morning
Take your breakfast, quench
Slake with ale or broth, herring
Here you wait for washing orders
Whipe your camp out clean of stench
[Navy chorus]
A stone to sharpen the sword
A sword to whipe them clean
A boat to sail upon the waves
This night our sword do gleam
Told you tell scolded unbold cold
Tale of making mocking fished food
Fire pit sticked ash splash
Seaman salted lick-o-dash
Aloo, ah, poisson
A'hoi palloi
Poison ploy
Alloh, alloh, tap tap rad-ee-oh
Cruiser fixxus
crux delux croissant
Tell thee well time twas swell
Waves a-crash, here's your crab
Spotted men swimming ashore
Eat it all and spill them later
Ja! Huzhah!
Arise for morning prayers, arise
Clank clash crash fast
A sword, a fish, a pikeman bowman
Seaman, arise you Punk!
Wash your hands of firepit funk
[Fishermen chorus]
A ship of foul infested fools
The fools fight for midnight dear
Above the map shines clear
Mid-sight, all dim, broken steer
In the waves there is dying
On the rocks there is drying
At the shore there is frying
Into the sea, crashing on bodies
Bodies into the ocean, blood blood
Into the water, blood fish blood
Intactio communicato
Alloh alloh, communicasion commenzeree
Huhzhah, Ja hai'dt Allah, Star
Arise for eve'nin' cleaning
Smelly lust, Seaman
Moon and dust, Punk
Punk, sea of men scarred a-mar
One, Star One, Ahoy!
Alloh, Aye, Ahoy!
Fish and flesh they are woven
Have mercy the glancing glint
Spear in man with army flint
Arrow in water the sea has chosen
One Star, One
Aye, Star One, Aye
Cry softly dimming still midnight
We die sunken, arise alight
Arrow in air, alit far flight
Army ashore, alight aflight
Rise rise, army rise
Into the horizon onto the sky
Night alive, fire and fly
Ha did not explain to Jason the confusion of activities in the anecdote or tactical plan. They had seminar after the song they created together. Jason was given a military versus civilian scenario to consider. His position is supposed to be with the Catholic Church. There is a priest panicking while giving a report of a naval disaster. Jason's improvisations for the song is as the persona of a benign, happy-go-lucky fortune-hunting captain. But he chances upon a strange situation. Jason asked about the mute character in the story, about the Punk. And then the story jumps to “One star one”, is that a circle around a star? So I said it was so, Aye aye, Jason said. Jason meant a sheriff.
With Rgo and “Mariner's song”, there is no flight recorder. There is a radio in the song, and there is radio chatter. The song is not about band Rammstein nor the USA's Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. There is no sheriff in the song but close, a villain captain. There is a Punk character from the day's exercises at Ha's house that Saturday, the same persona Ha used earlier, a Punk who sings “Rise, rise!” In “Mariner's song”, the Punk is on the beach being treated fairly and not so fairly, depending on interpretation. The Punk lives to join seminar, Ha said, sponsored by the priest. He's your T.A. at college.
Ha summarized the viscious circle of desperation and warring, of capturing enemy workers and enslaving native civilians. Do not blame Thomas that seminar discussions are more intense than meditations. You banter with him, you connive. We have conversations, Thomas and I, but I would not invite him to seminar. Too slow for him, strategy is for plebs and cadets. With a guy like him, grand tactics is the same as grand strategy. It's confusing for people like us. Let's simplify the way I know how.
The weapons you know. Sword, spear, lance, bow and arrow. Three verbs also same as their nouns, not the bow and arrow. Fishermen would use a spear. Or a triton, Jason said. Sinking boats and forced drowning are the usual tactics on the water ship-to-ship. Men have to swim for it instead of clinging to parts of their ship, they might have a chance of surviving. Perhaps not the captain. An agressive captain needs muscles, he abducts the Punk and tosses him onto the beach.
