“Five to Ten”

1. the one Jason submitted to GEMA is 70 percent his arrangement and edit of the improvised lyrics, which he and Ha sang twice, with and without guitar. Only one section of lyrics was used by Rammstein, the anthropomorphic, deification one—go figure. Guys, guys, guys, you guiii-uiiiys...
       It was unknown if any Rammsteiner would take seriously Jason's idea to get two albums out by 1997. Ha wanted to keep them out of the studio as long as possible. But touring is grueling. A few tryout songs now and then, before recording, could be hammered out with a live crowd, so it would have to be a professional balance. Jason balked at the notion, Professional?! That means they earn a living directly from what they do, and they should keep a large chunk of the earnings. To Ha, Rammstein typically exceeded her expectations. The haggling upward of the band's dependency on RammyTeens by end of 1997-1998 was ridiculous. The band was supposed to get at least one gold album by then. Platinum would be nice but not necessary. Oh, just “put it on the demo tape” for Richard Kruspe. Ha said, He would clearly know, right, that there is no magnatape. A vanilla file folder is not a tape. Jason used Ha's didactic tactics. Every tick mark, metronome, evenly measured, perfectly rendered, exquisitely indexed. Give them a box of smelly markers and get it over with, tell him we've got nothing. It's not virtual in outerspace they can fetch from the Russians, it's not beamed into the producer's brains from Pentagon Radio FM 1. In what format is the demo? Jason was not delerious, Justice. 2. the guitar lead arrangement and about 60 percent played by Kirk Hammet, originally a tutorial for Jason on singing tenor with a chopstick baton, was a longer Lead Guitar part that had, oh, four more chords and was not as fun to play (Kirk's guitar looks spiffy in the 2026 Berlin video). It was not easy for Jason whenever Ha made fun of Rock and Metal guitaring by singing with a Bic lighter against her teeth. He had to echo her. Too many notes from the Tah-tah Tee-tee and he could not find it quickly on the fingerboard, he learned vibrato easily during “Five to Ten”. His left-hand fingering was getting precise on one string and quarter note chords up five and seven positions.
       He had a choice between developing perfect pitch or relative pitch. He did not flip a coin. Ha had two minutes to explain her decision for him. She chose relative pitch for him, which she had warned the study was harder, it would be half academic and more skills involved.
       Meanwhile, her friend MarkS in guitar class at school told her it was a good idea to follow Kirk Hammett's style and flop those fingers over the fingerboard for barre chords. Back at her house, she said the same to Jason. He put his aunt's (Thomas's wife) opera gloves on her so she could exaggerate Halloween zombie hands. It worked. Shoegazer liked the look and discussed Goth and Punk fashions for Richard.
       Ha demonstrated First Guitar and swoopy singing in a British accent for Shoegazer, Jason filled in with harmony on guitar. She remembered the gift leather cuffs she received the year before from the children at the park and put those on instead. His turn, he sang harmony and did Rhythm by himself for section III. Ha cleaned her Bic lighter, adjusted her guitar strap, brushed her hair... Aren't you going to dance? No, the mosh pit collapsed at the fifth measure. Good rhythm, weird chord. I have some armor on now. I'll stay standing up. More British singing, please.
       Jason went through his passages cleaning up his chords in his left hand, while Ha marched in place. She would not play Lead until he had at least four clean measures together, chord after chord with smooth rhythm transitions. She shouted Tah-tah Tee-tee like a saxophone, then a trumpet, whenever his singing was out of range for his voice or not naturally amplified properly. Like clouds over me, Cadet Guyker yelled when he was not perfect, It's going to rain on me. Ha hammered some basic chords in first position, hopping up and down. His turn to do some Lead Guitar, Ha growling or something (like early days of Rammstein), tiresome the militaristic rapidity of the rhyme flow. It was her longest ‘stand up and sing with guitar’ improvisation with RammyTeens (Jason also on guitar).

4. (1993) the private version, the one Ha serenaded to Jason when he had an intermission with the chopstick. The original second section (Roman numerals I and II) was about rain far out in the desert where Jason would return from, 600-800 kilometers away, to wait approximately six days for the rain to start in town. There was a 40 degrees Fahrenheit difference between the two locations, which was not close enough to day-night temperature difference at the mountain back of Fort Huachuca (80 degrees difference, below freezing at night, feels like warm spring in February in the daytime). In reality, Ha's low blood pressure caused her body temperature to drop while he practiced conducting, so she asked Jason for his arm, which she sucked his warmth out. That version Ha later obscured...
   
   
5. (2012) the rain section (II) was reposted to rgoDark. She did not use a box-step waltz for that one (compressing III and IV) but a quick-tempo Viennese waltz without changing genders until the mid-change back to parade marching band leader walking backwards, gender-agnostic. The lyrics for which foot, which gender, ballroom dance or march, forward or backward, is a little different but consistent as lyrics if the vocalist pays attention and wanted neat differences without letting people stumble. There were lyrics for “do not disconnect like Torvill and Dean at the Olympics”, even in a parade.
       rgoDark asked for fitted German lyrics rough or sexed out, you know, Rammstein style, rather than transliteration. They chose the footwork choreography for section III. They sucked at choreographing for a field column of musicians, so they quit that. “I want to sing like Till Lindemann. You are saying I should not hold my breath but hold the note longer but relaxing and releasing gradually breathing out.” They timed themselves on the metronome that singing is harder than thrashing on instruments. Most of them were alto and became comfortable with their range after fifteen minutes of vocals warm-up, which they had never done before.
       They did English exercises with syllables to perfect their cadences, which they had never paid attention to before... at a huge imbalance to easy singing and nongibberish poetry. Actually, pretty good for civilians who never had a formal dance teacher. Encouraged, they did their sex addiction and Heavy Metal thrash lyrics to section I and then quit. Section II can be instrumental, an easy excuse; they could not stretch the arrangement beyond 4 minutes. «“Ramm4” That's it? We managed to match “Ramm4” in effort? Six minutes is crazy!» Ha teased they could compose their own Lead Guitar part. Listen to Richard Kruspe on Rammstein tapes, do what he does, she bluffed. She never really heard a whole Rammstein song or anything, had no clue what his Lead Guitar work was like. “I know a few songs I can do now, I have them on CD”. So the aspiring musician from rgoDark disappeared for 20 minutes. Came back reporting with what seems like keener ears with just a little warm-up on guitar.
       They were happy with the result. Ha customized for each person at a time over the Internet. One guy liked his “slinky” and managed a satisfying 7-minute version of “Sonne” he recorded and shared with Ha. A 5:1 singing expedition of groovy results. For every 5 minutes practicing singing and breathing with Ha's guidance, 1 minute went into the pro-am recordable version.
       rgoDark liked the counting better than topics and poetics and waited on Ha to merge “Sonne” and “Five to Ten”. Nobody helped her with the German, so fans got what they got and she quit. Even Jason did not do what Shoegazer wanted, which was to translate Ha's lyrics. Nope, she does not want to say ten or diez, she says “out” like a radio operator, Jason defended.
